CNC Vertical Machining Center (Vacuum clamping fixture for holding Test Plates during drilling and reaming)

Task -
Enable milling of the top surface and drilling of holes thru the plates. Plates range in thickness from .125 to .500,
to be held in each of the (15) locations, singularly. The fixture must also insure the parts are seated properly.
Fixture clamp and unclamp push button are to be interfaced to the existing controls.
Solution -
Fixture base was manufactured from aluminum tooling plate, that was hard anodized after machining. This
provided a very hard, wear resistant surface on the fixture. The parts are held in place by a vacuum system and
datum located in the “X” “Y” plane by use of fixed locator pins and mechanical clamp system. The vacuum
holding system is a “bellows” style vacuum cups, which are embedded in the top surface of the fixture. When the
vacuum is applied, the cups retract and the parts are pulled down on to the fixture surface. Special vacuum check
valves are used that ensure parts are seated correctly.
